Today is World Press Freedom Day. It’s an international day of recognition, and one we’re adopting at Buffalo’s Fire to spread awareness about the state of press freedom and also, share ideas about what you can do. A few suggestions:
Thank a local journalist in your community.
Local newspapers and media outlets keep communities informed and provide important announcements about local events. Take a moment to connect with the local reporters in your community, or drop them a thank you card.
Stay informed about press freedom.
Buffalo’s Fire umbrella nonprofit, the Indigenous Media Freedom Alliance, has a site dedicated to information about the state of press freedom in Indian Country.
Support Buffalo’s Fire.
Our series, Shine, is a months-long exploration into the people who are working towards more transparency in tribal government. Support our journalism identifying the solutions for a more informed tribal citizenry.
Happy World Press Freedom Day in Indian Country!
